Tonara went from a “game-changer” to a “lifesaver” for music teachers. Students can chat with their teacher and fellow students, send recordings, earn points, unlock stickers, and more. There are Premium features available, but the way that works is that students must pay a fee (the fee is $39 per month, and half of this goes to the teacher!). Two years ago, with new investment funds coming in, they shifted their focus and started working to add more functionality to help meet the needs of music teachers.

Platform Overview

It had the ability to track a student's practicing and set targets for them. The application also enables users to record their performances, and share them with friends. The Tonara app was discontinued and shut down on December 8th, 2023. The software was initially launched as an iPad application in September 2011.

After that sigh of relief, I let go of worrying about how to save and deliver assignments. The seamless migration of assignments across platforms is magical! I wanted the luxury of time to explore the app before I had to commit to using it full-time in November. I’m a HUGE fan of Nicola Canton, her brilliant approach to teaching, and her philosophy on practice, so this decision did not come quickly. At $9.99 a month and the ability to seamlessly migrate all assignments from Tonara, Practice Space was my top choice.

I also love having a library of assignments that can have attachments such as recordings or videos for quick reminders on a tricky rhythm or a rote piece. I have some students who will send recordings via Tonara midweek or ask a question about a piece and I love that they don’t have to wait until their next lesson to have that question answered. If you want to take it a step further, enlist a few reliable students to help you test the waters. If you want to continue the route of an online assignment tool, I would encourage you to not just jump into the next app you hear the most about but try out at least two or three for comparison. Maybe you need to release the pressure and go without an app until the end of the semester and give yourself time to make a comfortable and not a snap decision. Perhaps you might want to take some time checking in with your studio families before making a decision, whether that be through a formal poll or just quietly feeling out a select handful of parents.

The tonara.com first product is called Tonara Studio, an all-in-one platform (Desktop & App) that helps teachers engage with their students in between lessons. Tonara operates in the music education sector, offering tools for teachers and students. I hear again and again how much studio teacher’s absolutely love incorporating this app with their students, so I’ll continue recommending it. The platform connects students with top music teachers worldwide, making quality music education more accessible and engaging. Tonara advances music education by integrating AI technology into a comprehensive platform designed for both music teachers and students.
